Tiger nut is a tuber of Cyperus esculentus L. var. sativus, a plant in the family Cyperaceae. It is native to Central Africa and widely cultivated in the Mediterranean region. It was introduced to China in the 1950s and is currently grown in Hebei, Gansu, Shandong, and other regions of China.
